In case you missed UAL’s Summer Shows, there’s another chance to see a selection of BA and MA graduate work from Camberwell, Chelsea, and Wimbledon. The exhibition of 30 artists is open from 24 September to 4 October 2014 at Chelsea College of Arts.

A quick virtual tour of “Assembly” show

If you’ve got some spare time after taking in the Turners at Tate Britain, pop across the street to Chelsea College of Arts to get a dose of contemporary energy from the “Assembly” of new artists who’ve just finished their BA or MA course from one of UAL’s CCW group, which includes Camberwell, Chelsea, and Wimbledon colleges.  The show was curated by two of UAL’s department chairs, Ben Kelly, Chair of Interior and Spatial Design, and Paul Goodwin, Chair of Black Art and Design.

Following is a “virtual tour” with snapshots of about half of the 30 artists’ work on display, although there’s much more to see in the sizeable exhibition spaces of Chelsea’s Triangle Space and Cookhouse Gallery.

“Assembly” – Triangle Space

Jane Kidson, with an MA in Printmaking from Camberwell College of Arts uses photography and digital technology to explore “private mythologies”. And she’s found a way to incorporate 150-year-old technology, too, with a modern version of a stereoscope to give extra dimension to her photos.

The Triangle Space is used to great effect to show a number of 2-D as well as 3-D work, including paintings, drawings, sculpture, and installations.

This installation, by Marion Guerineau from Chelsea’s MA in Graphic Design and Communication, needed a bit more time to take in, and gives the viewer an opportunity to make his or her own book of personal philosophy, depending on which pages are chosen and in what order they are arranged.

Artists with a sense of humour are always a hit, as in these pink… errrm… toolboxes from Niamh Cunningham, graduating with BA Textiles, Chelsea College of Arts.

Film is an essential element in the work of Stella Cecil (MA Theatre Design) and Patrick Rowan (BA – Print and Time-based Media), both artists from Wimbledon College of Arts.

“Assembly” – Cookhouse Gallery

“Assembly” continues in the adjacent Cookhouse Gallery with a large-scale drawing by MA Drawing graduate Gavin Edmonds, which was pieced together over two months, only to be erased in minutes prior to the final show as “something that was once there but now no longer so…but traces remain.”

The wall installation by Camilla Brueton (MA Drawing, Wimbledon) refers to architecture juxtaposed with minimalistic concrete hammers by Cuthbert Noble (BA Fine Art – Sculpture, Wimbledon), so that one might consider the relationship between construction and breaking down.

Interactive installations from Aaron Wells and Timothy Ekins, both from Chelsea with a BA Fine Art, let each viewer form a unique experience of the artwork.
